Octopole magnet
An octopole magnet (or octupole magnet) is a specialized magnetic device engineered to generate an eight-pole magnetic field—consisting of four north poles and four south poles arranged in an alternating, symmetrical pattern around a central axis.

In classical electromagnetism, the magnetic field potential near the center of a multipole magnet can be mathematically
expressed via multipole expansion:
- Dipole (2 poles): Generates a uniform magnetic field (used for bending charged particle beams).
- Quadrupole (4 poles): Generates a linear field gradient (used for focusing particle beams).
- Sextupole (6 poles): Generates a quadratic field gradient (used for correcting chromatic aberrations).
- Octopole (8 poles): Generates a cubic magnetic field gradient ($B \propto r^3$, where $r$ is the radial distance from the central axis).
Because the magnetic field strength of an octopole magnet is virtually zero at the exact center and increases dramatically as you move outward toward the edges, it exerts a non-linear restoring force on charged particles.
